Variables

Independent Variable: different (sodas)

Dependent Variable: Height of explosion in cm

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Geyser tube, same brand of mentos, same size of soda and put the soda in the same place, also used the centimeters in all of it.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

An experiment was conducted to determine how different sodas react with Mentos. 20oz bottles of Sprite,Diet Coke, Coke,Orange soda, and Mountain dew were purchased. One package of original Mentos was purchased. The experiment was conducted outside the school on the sidewalk. First a bottle of Diet Coke will be set on the sidewalk. The top will be opened and one Mentos candy will be dropped in and the lid will be resealed quickly. The tester quickly backed a safe distance away and their arm was extended above their head. A second tester will be standing approximately 50 feet away to take a picture of the bottle at its highest point. This process was repeated twice with each type of soda. It was important to open the sodas carefully so none fizzed out too soon. It was important to have a flat surface so that the bottles did not tip over. Safety of the tester was ensured by stepping away after the Mentos was placed.

Potential Problems And Solutions

you need to clean the Geyser tube or else the mentos get stuck and you fail your experiment
putting different mentos in each trial is hard because of the data
the whole pack of mentos should be added for each soda for each trial

Safety Or Environmental Concerns:

there really isn't any safety the only one is, is that if you don't want to get soaked my soda then move out of the way fast but if you do then stay there.

Background Research

what are mentos made of?
They all contain sugar, hydrogenated coconut oil, and gum Arabic, for mint flavored Mentos it's a combination of sugar, glucose syrup, hydrogenated coconut oil, gelatin, dextrin, natural flavor, corn starch, and gum arabic.

what are each soda made of (coke diet coke etc)
Orange soda:Serving Size: 1 can. Amount per serving - Calories, 190; Total Fat, 0 g, 0% DV; Sodium, 45 mg, 2% DV; Total Carb., 52 mg, 17% DV; Sugars, 52 g; Protein, 0 g.
Not a significant source of other nutrients.
Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

what is the difference between diet coke and coke?
Regular Coca-Cola has 140 calories, 0 fat grams, 45mg of sodium, 39g of carbs, 39g of sugar, and 0g protein.
Diet Coke has 0 calories, 0 fat grams, 1mg of sodium, 0g of carbs, 0g of sugar, and 0g of proteins.

Mountain Dew:Mountain Dew lists its ingredients as:
  • Carbonated water
  • High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
  • Concentrated orange juice and other natural flavors
  • Citric acid
  • Sodium benzoate (preserves freshness)
  • Caffeine (55.2 mg per 12 oz.)
  • Sodium citrate
  • Gum arabic
  • Erythorbic acid (preserves freshness)
  • Calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor)
  • Brominated vegetable oil
  • Yellow 5
Sprite:carbonated water
sugar
citric acid
sodium citrate (E331)
sodium benzoate (E211)
flavourings

how many mentos are usually used in the mentos experiment?
I used 1, and then 4 and 5 but you can use as many as you want.

Detailed Procedure

  • gather materials (sodas,mentos,camera,meter stick,person)
  • put bottle next to wall and put a piece of tape on the wall where the top is
  • measure .5 meters above the tape and put another piece of tape
  • keep doing this until there is tape as high as 3 meters
  • place the bottles on a piece of sidewalk outside the school next to the wall so the top of the bottle is next to the tape
  • start with diet coke
  • un twist the cap slowly
  • place geyser tube on top of Diet Coke, make sure pin is in
  • drop one mento’s into the Geyser tube
  • screw geyser tube top on
  • walk away holding the string, about 1 meter away from bottle, pull string,
  • Observe soda explode to see how high up the wall the explosion goes
  • record the data on the data table
  • clean up area
  • repeat again for Coke
  • repeat again for sprite
  • repeat again for orange soda
  • repeat again for mountian dew
  • repeat again for diet coke

Results

Five different sodas were used to measure in centimeters the height of soda when it exploded after adding mentos. Diet Coke had the highest explosion, measuring 128 cm, 0 cm,and 235 cm.Sprite had explosions of 63 cm,136 cm and 0 cm. Coke had explosions of 45 cm,0 cm, and 136 cm. Mt. Dew had explosions of 46 cm,70cm,60cm. Orange soda had an explosion of 31 cm,0 cm,and 100 cm. Diet Coke had the highest mean explosion height of 121 cm. The rest of the mean results are: Sprite 66.3, Coke 60.3, Mt 58.7, Orange 43,7.

Discussion

The question that ran the experiment was what was the height of soda after putting in mentos. Yes the question was answered. The answer was that Diet Coke worked the best.Diet Coke went the highest, the evidence that was seen was that it starts to bubble and less than a minute explodes. Putting in a certain amount of mentos matter on how high it goes. It was hypothesized that the Mountian Dew would go higher than Diet Coke and the orange would not go that high. Orange soda was the 3rd soda to be the highest, Mountain Dew was the 4th and Coke was right behind Diet Coke. Diet Coke was the best on trial 3 that's when the experimenters put in 5 mentos and for trial 1 they put in 1 mentos and for trial 2 they tryed to put in 4 mentos but it failed, because the 4 mentos got stuck in the Geyser tube and only 2 went in. It was challenging to measure the height of the soda in cm.
It was challenging because soda exploded everywhere and the experimenters didn’t know where it was exactly. The experimenters didn’t have a choice to change how the design of the soda bottles were. The technology that was used to conduct this experiment were a flip camera to videotape my observation, The experimenters also needed a geyser tube because the geyser tube would make it shoot up straight and faster and also it helped to ensure that all sodas were an equal measurement. A yardstick was also used for data collection, using the yardstick was pretty easy, because it helped the experimenters to measure the soda accurately. It would be beneficial for future experimenters to use these instruments as they proved to be sufficient for accuracy for this experimenter. Therefore it would be recommended to use these same equipment. Looking back at the flip camera footage it was great to see that the experimenters couldn't use any other tools. The knowledge gained through this experiment could possibly indicate that the ingredients of the sodas that were tested maybe worse or better for you because some fizzed more than others and that’s what it is doing to your belly. People who have medical issues may want to know what they are drinking and what it could possibly do to their belly. In conclusion medical professionals and scienctist may continue to research these inconclusions and possibly change the way that these beverages are made. It could very well change the way that these drinks are made if they are doing damage to future generations.
